sage finds — july 31 ** with updates!

I started this blog because I was growing frustrated with the resources out there for frugal and green parenting. Coupon and discount-promoting sites are great, except that the savings are generally on products we don’t use at stores we won’t shop at (you’ll never see a Walmart recommendation here…). Green baby items are lovely, but we have triplets and are not going to spend $22 on an organic cotton onesie, no matter how much I might like to.

Instead, we do our best for the environment and our kids by utilizing all of the natural parenting finds we can come across. Mined from this week’s sources, here’s what I’ve got my eye on right now:

  • $5 off $20 purchase TODAY ONLY at Walgreens (see post below)
  • The Cheerios Challenge — True, Cheerios aren’t organic, but they are a staple in many households and this is a great deal for a free box plus six $1-off coupons!
  • Join the Seventh Generation Nation for their email newsletter and printable coupons

I know it doesn’t seem like much sometimes, with the hundreds of coupons floating around for conventional products, but I will do my best to keep a carefully edited list here of eco- and baby-friendly steals.

EDITED to add: It looks like Dawn dish soap is going to be on sale at CVS next week. There will also be a coupon for it in many Sunday papers, bringing the total for a bottle down to as little as $0.88. Dawn is a popular cloth diaper stripper, especially for diapers with fleece content. I’ve never tried it on our diapers (and have heard not to use it in the front loader), but I know people who swear by it.

let’s get this party started

Woo! What seems to be a monthly coupon from Walgreens is out for today only:

I’m going to use mine for Similac Organic. My triplet boys are 4 months old and I’m not able to breastfeed them exclusively, so I supplement with organic formula. Organic formula that never goes on sale, of course. These coupons plus formula checks (sourced across the internet and the subject of a post someday) help make it affordable for us.

I am also a big believer in voting with our checkbooks. Similac is the only major infant formula company to offer an organic version, and our purchases of it sends an important message to them and other companies that we’d like to see more products like this in the marketplace. For many of us, green living is not a fad, and seeing a variety of organic products in conventional stores is still shocking. Shocking, but very convenient!

Other green parenting products you might find at your Walgreens include white vinegar (good for endless numbers of household cleaners and all-purpose laundry girl Friday, gardening spray bottles that can be repurposed for said cleaner, or organic premade baby food from Gerber.

What will you buy at Walgreens today?

what am i thinking?

I’m pretty sure that’s what my husband is going ask me when I tell him I’ve started this blog! I had a little brainstorm last night (a brain drizzle?) and this was the result. I read dozens of blogs about saving money. Another dozen about going green. Another two dozen about parenting. Besides the odd post here and there, none specialize in frugal green parenting. So, welcome sage!

Who am I? A mom to 4 adorable boys, a passionate environmentalist, and a dedicated bargain shopper. I don’t want to pay full price for the things I have to buy, and I want to recycle, upcycle, and create as much as I can. Expect sage to feature the best of the web coupons and rebates for green products, product reviews for what we are using around the house, links to items and stories that inspire me, and more.
