sage finds: october 31

I’ve been reading all of my same sources but, sadly, haven’t seen any green coupons, freebies, or discounts! This is the first time that’s been the case since I started writing here a few months ago!

Potentially of interest is that many Walgreens locations are offering Halloween photo shoots for kids in costume. Depending on the store, it’s free (ours is) or $0.31, and they are offering everything from one free 4×8 photo card to a free photo CD. Details and locations here.

To make up for the lack of the good stuff, how about a recipe? Here is a one bowl banana muffin or bread goodie that will get some of the Halloween candy out of the candy bowl…

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter (microwave it for 30 seconds so it’s soft)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 mashed overripe bananas
  • 3-4 individual sized packets of m&ms, Raisinettes, or other small chocolate candies

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9×5 inch loaf pan or 9 regular-size muffins in a muffin tin.

In a large bowl, combine butter, brown sugar, eggs and bananas with a potato masher. Add flour, baking soda and salt on top and mix together until just moistened. Add candy and stir to mix. Pour batter into prepared pan.

Bake in preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes (more for a loaf, less for muffins), until a toothpick inserted into center of the loaf comes out clean. Let bread cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack.

The yummy results:

Another Walgreens coupon! This one is for $10 off $40 and good tomorrow and Saturday. We’re trying a new formula with one of the triplets to see if it clears up his eczema (before switching all 3), so this will certainly help me stock up. That’s the great thing about identical triplets, you can always have a control group.

I am itching to try Tastybaby frozen organic baby food. Before I order mass quantities from Amazon, I’m going to check it out locally (we happen to have one of the few national retailers near us) and will report back.

Freebies 4 Mom is talking laundry and links to Ecover’s coupon page, where there is $0.75 any product and $1 off laundry items.

Want Not has a code for $25 when you open an ING checking account. I’m going to count the pennies I make (post-nanny paycheck) when I go back to work very carefully and I definitely want my own account and debit card for that money, since I am going to try to contain certain expenditures (read: eBay) to that account. Perhaps this would be a good way to do it.

sage finds: this just in!

The Walgreens end-of-the-month coupon is here, it’s a $5/$20 and it’s good for 2 days. There are also some school supply coupons on the same page. I wonder if I could use some of those erasers for my rubber stamping ideas. At $0.39, might as well buy some and try!

let’s get this party started

Woo! What seems to be a monthly coupon from Walgreens is out for today only:

I’m going to use mine for Similac Organic. My triplet boys are 4 months old and I’m not able to breastfeed them exclusively, so I supplement with organic formula. Organic formula that never goes on sale, of course. These coupons plus formula checks (sourced across the internet and the subject of a post someday) help make it affordable for us.

I am also a big believer in voting with our checkbooks. Similac is the only major infant formula company to offer an organic version, and our purchases of it sends an important message to them and other companies that we’d like to see more products like this in the marketplace. For many of us, green living is not a fad, and seeing a variety of organic products in conventional stores is still shocking. Shocking, but very convenient!

Other green parenting products you might find at your Walgreens include white vinegar (good for endless numbers of household cleaners and all-purpose laundry girl Friday, gardening spray bottles that can be repurposed for said cleaner, or organic premade baby food from Gerber.

What will you buy at Walgreens today?
